The houses
Mount Airy is known for large three-story, gray-stone Victorian, Colonial Revival, Norman and Cotswold-style houses. Germantown Avenue, its main commercial street, is stone-paved. Wissahickon schist, a silver to brown mica schist, is quarried locally as a building stone.
What to know about pointing here
Stone walls usually have wider, less regular joints than brick, and the mortar’s color and texture shape the look of the whole house. NPS’s rule still applies: mortar softer than the stone. Ask for a sample area. Part of Germantown Avenue is in the Central Mount Airy commercial historic district, where masonry work needs Historical Commission review.
